Street luging

street lugingStreet luge is an extreme gravity-powered activity that involves riding a streetluge board (sometimes referred to as a sled) down a paved road or course. Street luge is also known as land luge or road luge. Like skateboarding, street luge is often done for sport and for recreation.

Other than the prone riding position and greater than 70 miles per hour (115 km/h) speed, street luge has little relation to its winter namesake (luge).

Mountain boarding

mountain boardingMountain boarding, also known as dirtboarding, or all-terrain-boarding, is a new board sport, derived from snowboarding. It was originally intended to take the place of snowboarding during warm months while there was no snow available. It was only in the last 8 or 9 years that mountain boarding has developed into a sport in its own right.

A mountain board is similar to a snowboard. The size of the deck is shorter than the average snowboard, approximately 110 cm in length with four wheels. The wheels consist of small alloy hubs with tires of between 7″ and 12″ diameter. The wheel size varies depending on which type of riding is done. For example, an 8″ wheel would be for freestyle riding and jumping. The larger wheel is used by the downhill rider. Like a snowboard (and unlike a skateboard) the feet of the rider are attached to the board deck with bindings, however boots are not required. Most mountain boards are equipped with ‘channel trucks’ which are similar in appearance to a skateboard truck but are spring-loaded to stiffen up turning. One revolutionary new board design, by Howla mountain boards, uses polyurethane bushes to give the most efficient steering available at present.
The two main styles of riding are downhill (freeride & racing) and freestyle.

Freeride is done on a variety of terrain, from ski resorts, when the snow has melted away, to downhill mountain bike courses, to woodlands and forests. More and more dedicated centres are being opened around the world specifically for the sport of mountain boarding. Racing tends to be either of slalom, two riders weaving between poles, or boarder cross, a category of racing that is similar to BMX courses, with berms and jumps.

Freestyle riding consists of ramp jumping; performing tricks which can be rotations (180, 360 and more degree turns), inverted tricks (back flips, front flips), board grabs (tail grab and front grab) and one foot variations (or even no foot variations like “supermans and superman fingerflips”.

A variation on mountain boarding is kite landboarding. This involves using a power kite to pull the rider on a mountain board and gives them the ability to use the kite to generate enough power to get some lift, normally several feet up in the air and perform tricks.

Red Bull Down Metro Urban Downhill race

red bull down metroMexico City recently rescheduled its rush hour to midnight: in the world’s first Dual Downhill Race in a subway station, 32 mountain bikers demonstrated how to make line jumpers at ticket counters and escalator rowdies look really old and sedate in the morning crush…

“The idea behind this race is brilliant. I’m pleased that we came all the way to Mexico City for it”, Gee Atherton says with a grin and red bull down metroa high-five with his brother Dan. The two Brits, 21 and 24 years old respectively, dominated the Red Bull Down Metro - the world’s first Dual Downhill Race in a subway station - in first and third place.

Over escalators and steep stairs

red bull down metron front of thousands of curious onlookers, 32 death-defying downhillers plunged into the depths of the Metro station Barranca del Muerto shortly after the trains stopped running on November 4. The course led from the station entrance over steep stairs and tight escalators to the platform of Mexico City’s second-deepest subway station, 230 feet below. The only difference compared to normal operation conceded by the organizers was to erect steep banks in tight corners, in order to keep the neck-breaking speeds especially high. The dual duels on the daily route to work for thousands of local inhabitants were shown live on big screens to the spectators at street level.

Duel at dawn

red bull down metroDaybreak was near by the time the Athertons, whose 18-year-old sister is also a successful downhill biker, finished the spectacular underground show occupying two of the places on the podium. Local hero Memo de Uslar, several-times Mexican champion, trailed behind in fourth place after seven rounds. His fair congratulations: “The competition was so good that I’m completely satisfied with my result”.

Rocket powered mountain bike

lol Hmmm. They should tie some baseball cards to the forks next time, I loved doing that as a kid. He was going about 151ish mph (242 kph), more than enough for someone to shit in their pants.

Tony Hawk and Others Raise Money to Build Skate Parks in Urban Communities

tony hawkTony Hawk, the legendary skateboarding icon, is again getting involved in the community and his foundation just held the annual “Stand up for Skate parks” this past Sunday where Hawk and dozens of other skaters entertained all 900+ guests, including many celebrities, at the home of supermarket magnate Ron Burkle.

Hawk, Bucky Lasek, and Shaun White put on a demonstration for all those in attendance and all money raised went to helping to create more skate parks in urban areas. Those in attendance included actors David Spade and Jamie Lee Curtis. “Towns that do take the plunge and build a facility end up seeing positive results and having less problems with kids skating where they don’t want them to,” Hawk told The Associated Press. “They almost always build another one. They get more use than tennis courts or baseball fields.” It was not announced how much the vent made, but each year the Tony Hawk Foundations holds many events to help build skate parks in low income communities. Hawk is also busy putting the finishing touches on his newest video game, Tony Hawk Project 8 and is getting ready to promote it in a few weeks time.
